3cm’s Already?

September 6th, 2008 — 9:25pm

Well we had another exciting check up with the Dr on Friday. We went through all of the normal stuff… weight, movement, contractions, etc. Then we got to the good part. First, I asked if there was any way that she could estimate how big Thumper might be. She said that some people can do external manipulation and take a guess but she said “its a bunch of hu-ey, but I’ll do it for you if you want.” So of course we did! She thinks Thumper is about 7lbs or so. So that is good! That seems like a pretty normal size.

Then I had to get swabbed for Group Beta Strep (bacteria). During this time, we were explaining to her that we are supposed to go a wedding in Springfield on Saturday and “technically” the insurance company said that I shouldn’t go because it is outside of the county in which the hospital is in. Which meant, if I needed to get treatment in Springfield it would not be covered under our insurance. The Dr reassured us that it would probably be fine to go since most first time births take awhile. She offered to check to see if I was dilated at all to put our minds at ease. To our, and her, surprise, I am dilated to 3cm and 70% effaced. While this sounds exciting, it really doesn’t mean a whole lot. I could be dilated to 3cm for the next 3 and a half weeks until the due date, however she also told that that she was on call this weekend. She still gave us the ok to go to the wedding but Josh already had it in his head that if I was dilated, we weren’t going.

So, that’s where we are now! I am still having Braxton-Hicks contractions but nothing to signal real labor at this point. We will definitely keep you updated if anything changes. Our next appointment is with the nurse practioner on Friday. Oh, and Thumper’s heart rate was 150bpm.
